Bobby Fitzpatrick launches London’s first ‘Rum Off’ competition

Well, here’s something rather wonderful for the colder months… Bobby Fitzpatrick, the playful and 1970s-inspired bar in West Hampstead, has one of London’s best rum collections, and this Autumn will host London’s first ‘Rum Off’ competition which launches tonight, Wednesday 5th September.

Following on from the hugely successful ‘Gin Off’ tournaments at Bobby Fitzpatrick’s sister bar, Graphic Bar in Golden Square, Bobby Fitzpatrick will be hosting its own cocktail competition which will focus on Bobby’s tipple of choice – rum. This new competition will see eight leading rum brands compete through a series of exhilarating cocktail-making heats to be crowned Rum Off Champion 2018.

Spiced, flavoured, vintage, overproof; rum in all its forms has been enjoying a renaissance and is rapidly becoming the nation’s next favorite tipple. The ‘Rum Off’ will include household names alongside small batch artisanal rums. The full list of contenders comprises: Havana Club, The Real McCoy, Gosling’s, Skipper, Pusser’s, Westerhall Estate, Doorly’s and Plantation. Each rum will partner with a top bartender to devise an inventive rum serve; guests will be able to try one of each cocktail and will be able to vote for their favourite at the end of the evening, on polling cards.

The heats in September will be followed by semi-finals in October in which qualifiers will create a new bespoke cocktail. The Grand Final in November will be an intense battle of rum titans, as the overall winner will be in with a chance of winning a cash prize of £1000.

The 2018 fixtures:

• First Group: 5th September 2018 – Havana Club vs The Real McCoy vs Gosling’s vs Skipper
• Second Group: 26th September 2018 – Pusser’s vs Westerhall Estate vs Doorly’s vs Plantation
• Semi Final 1: 24th October 2018 – Winner of first group vs Runner up of second group
• Semi Final 2: 7th November 2018 – Winner of second of group vs Runner up of first group
• The Grand Final – 21st November 2018

While Bobby Fitzpatrick playfully draws design inspiration from the shag-pile carpets and bold prints of 1970s homeware, the bar takes spirits seriously and its cocktail menu features punchy drinks, with only the occasional novelty pink flamingo. The bar has a strong rum focus, and the menu, or ‘Rum Diaries’, is a log of Bobby’s favourite rums collected on his extensive travels.

The Rum Off promises to be an evening of punchy rum cocktails and tense competition through which amateurs, enthusiasts and experts alike are all invited to crown the first ever ‘Rum Off’ champion.
