Clerkenwell Design Week 2018: London’s Creative Heart

SEEN always enjoys Clerkenwell Design Week. There is so much to see and appreciate. The inventiveness and innovation on show is truly breathtaking, yet somehow it retains a playfulness and joy that is never oppressive or pretentious. With sustainability at the top of the agenda for many showrooms and designers, the products on display are built to last. A sure sign that consumers have the power to alter the way in which natural resources are harnessed to make the things that we love.

Not only that, there are demonstrations, talks and of course, launches and events that celebrate new collections and products. SEEN attended one last night at at Earth Gallery in Myddelton Street for Mater, whose sleek minimalist furniture and lighting showcased their ethical approach to production. SEEN is also keen to check out Cosentino City London. They will be previewing the new concrete-inspired designs for the Silestone quartz and Dekton surfaces as well as the intriguing ‘mevo by fußstetter’, a versatile kitchen concept.

The great joy of CDW is the installations, of course; somehow in keeping with the older architecture that so distinguishes this part of the capital. The area is well marked with directions. Smaller indie designers are well-represented and it’s always great to talk to and support the lifeblood of design, particularly in these days of Brexit-related uncertainty. Perhaps sustainability and ethical approaches are the very things that will ensure design innovation and growth in the years to come.
