Faster than a speeding Bulleit: Cocktails at Oslo Hackney

The late, great WC Fields once said: ‘Always carry a flagon of whiskey in case of snakebite, and furthermore, always carry a small snake’. Regular readers of this esteemed organ will know that SEEN needs no second bidding to sample the roll call of fab cocktails on offer at Oslo Hackney, though she draws the line at reptile transportation, you’ll be glad to hear.

It was the turn of Bulleit Bourbon to inspire three new drinks. Tasted by itself, Bulleit Bourbon is smoky and comforting, definitely to be sipped and savoured. The three cocktails: Blood and Sand; Whiskey Sour and a Frontier Old Fashioned (£6 each – very reasonable!) were mixed with panache by the friendly mixologists. SEEN sampled a Blood and Sand, being unable to resist anything with cherries. Bulleit Bourbon, sweet vermouth, cherry liqueur and fresh orange juice were the constituent ingredients. It went down only too agreeably. We also tried a Whiskey Sour: Bulleit Bourbon, plum syrup, lemon and bitters, with a lovely mint garnish. This was also very moreish. Easy to forget that BB is 45% proof! The Blood and Sand was a lovely pink, while the Whiskey Sour had a creamy froth on it. We didn’t risk a Frontier Old Fashioned (Bulleit Bourbon, sugar and bitters, as we had a fair way to go home.

If you haven’t been to Oslo before, SEEN recommends you check it out for the relaxed vibe, gigs, the food and drink especially, and above all its proximity to Hackney Central Station. So easy to get to (and home from). Thus fortified and glowing from our enjoyment of the cocktails, SEEN and her guest practically floated up the ramp to the station and away into the twilight. If there’s a better way to spend a Monday evening, SEEN doesn’t want to know about it.
