Bloomsbury Spirit at the Lady Ottoline

SEEN had the great pleasure of checking out the newly reopened Lady Ottoline pub just off the Gray’s Inn road. Sensibly keeping the green walls and Bloomsbury vibe in the décor, it was not hard to imagine Lady Ottoline Morrell herself entertaining Bertrand Russell, Aldous Huxley and the Bloomsbury set there at a salon.

The dining room itself is fabulous; elegant but intimate, twinkling candlelight, snowy napery, gleaming cutlery… SEEN was so enamoured, she was ready to move in. The whole building has lost none of its old-school charm, actually it feels like somebody’s house. There is a more general dining space opposite the room and you can order the British menu downstairs at the bar as well. It’s that kind of relaxed place, a fact that goes down well with the local community who have anticipated the pub’s renovation and reopening.

Chef Tom Haste trained with Rick Stein and is a firm believer in fresh ingredients that have not been overwhelmed with spices and extraneous flavours. In fact this attitude typifies the best in British cuisine in SEEN’s humble opinion. He’s also committed to buying British and creating a sustainable menu.

Tom’s modern menu will constantly evolve according to the availability of seasonal produce. Working directly with premium suppliers, guests will enjoy tasting fine British fare. Suppliers include Paddock Farm (Tamworth pigs), Foodchain (meat, fish and shellfish direct from source, ensuring sustainability) and Boulangerie de Paris (chemical free breads).

“Our focus at The Lady Ottoline is to source, cook and serve the best seasonal produce we can find. By keeping things simple and rustic, we’ll ensure the produce’s quality and flavour aren’t compromised.” Tom commented.

Signature dishes make their return, including Tom’s infamous haggis and pork scotch eggs and hearty Sunday roasts. Contemporary pub favourites will be served throughout the day; including beer battered haddock, steak and ale pie, a short rib beef burger and sharing plates including the Lady Ottoline board. For adventurous diners, dig deep and indulge with Tom’s braised ox cheek and mushroom wellington for two; served with potato cake, roast cauliflower, and truffle cheese.

Accompanying Tom’s menu, over 40 gins and cocktails will be served including Gin Genies, Old Fashioneds and Negronis along with on-tap specials and guest beers.

While keen to draw in influences from abroad in terms of inspiration, Tom will be putting his own unique twist on the ingredients. The local community, family and friends were out in force to support the new venture. That’s the nice thing, it’s sure to attract many for the Bloomsbury ambience and fine food but it will be a hub for the locals too; a slice of genuine London life. You have to go and see it for yourselves. It’s yet another example of what London does best at the moment, an experience.
