House of Vans London X Studio PSK: Let There be Light

One of SEEN’s favourite venues is House of Vans in Waterloo, the skate park and cultural space bar none. We hear that until 17th December 2017 House of Vans London has partnered with Studio PSK, award-winning London-based design and creative studio, to transform Tunnel 1 into a shifting, multicoloured lighting installation open to the public.

After the success of the Polyphonic Playground in 2016, Studio PSK return to House of Vans for a second time. Taking over the gallery space below Waterloo Station, the show explores our relationship with colour, light and perception; creating a landscape of optical illusions that the public are invited to explore hands-on.

The entire exhibition, from the specially commissioned artworks, to the objects within it, use the same shade of red, green and blue. Lighting in the space is controlled by a bespoke musical score. When flooded with the changing red, green and blue light, an analogue ‘stop frame animation’ effect is created, making static images appear to move.

From large-scale illustrations that spring to life, to a giant ball pit that appears to self-animate; Chroma throws the audience headfirst into a space where digital and analogue worlds dramatically collide.

Showcasing original artworks, and four pairs of custom Vans, are illustrators; Martina Paukova, Sam Taylor, Chester Holme and Dale Crosby Close. Each illustrator has created new large-scale artwork that springs to life under the changing colour of light. The illustrations have also been used to create four pairs of unique Vans shoes, using the new-to-Europe online “Custom” Vans editor tool. For those feeling inspired, visitors can take a plunge into the animated ball pit, and create their own analogue animations using red, green and blue stickers. Open Thursday to Sunday. SEEN will be diving in.
