My Baby: Prehistoric Rhythm

Hot off appearances at Glastonbury and Isle of Wight, the Dutch trio My Baby have just released Sunflower Sutra, the third single from their album Prehistoric Rhythm.

SEEN has been listening to the album and found it hypnotic, complex and totally engrossing. It opens with the mysterious and moving ‘Electrified’ followed by ‘Same Wave’, which is particularly evocative and layered, the lyrics hinting at a cathartic experience. The arrangement is similarly layered yet somehow sparse. SEEN defies anyone listening to ‘Love Dance’ not to get on their feet; it’s infectious. I particularly love the violins on’ Cosmic Radio’. ‘Moon Shower’ is a change in tempo, showing My Baby in reflective mood with soaring vocals, then it gears up into something else entirely. ‘Make a Hundred’ is just joyous, surely a live stormer? ‘Luminate’ is spare and lovely. ‘Haunt Me’ features those violins again with evocative sound work and Van Dyck’s versatile vocals. ‘Sunflower Sutra’ sees My Baby in upbeat mood, the mantra-like chorus exhorting loyal subjects to turn their faces to the sun. ‘Sunroof Diesel Blues’ will surely be the encore of their live set! ‘Straight No Chaser’ with its old-school blues vibe has got to be another crowd-pleaser. Van Dyck’s vocal style is a creature of many moods.

Well-attuned to narrative elements in My Baby’s music, frontwoman Cato Van Dyck embodies a holy woman who connects the real and spirit worlds. She comments: ‘This is the story of an ancient city’s Queen blessing her people. Moroccan Gnawa trance meets a dance-themed Andean Hymn, instilling the city dwellers with a belief in the power of the sun.’

We can only imagine that their live shows are less a performance and more of an immersive sound and vision experience. Fans going to their London gig tonight at Dingwalls on October 4th are in for a treat.

Ladies of the Press at Sluice Biennial

SEEN headed up to Hackney recently, there to peruse this year’s Sluice Biennial. A large and airy building at Morning Lane housed fascinating creative projects by artists and creators who have come together under the Sluice banner. What SEEN particularly liked was the variety of work on display and the informal atmosphere in which it …

The Castle at the Space: SEEN Reviews

SEEN was not that familiar with the work of Howard Barker prior to seeing ‘The Castle’ but feels she must rectify that situation. A powerful piece on the nature of masculinity, war, gender roles and the essential unreliability of religious faith, ‘The Castle’ benefits from a powerhouse cast and a stripped-back set, making the most of the Space’s environment.
