Laugh Comedy Club Launches at 100 Wardour Street on 25th September

SEEN will be going to this new comedy night at 100 Wardour Street. We’ve already sampled the delicious breakfasts there, so a combination of comedy and food is destined to go down very well indeed.

Ginglik Productions is delighted to announce that its Laugh Comedy Club will be taking up residence in the heart of London’s Soho at the wondrous 100 Wardour St. Previously the home of the legendary Marquee Club and Floridita, the venue is steeped in history. Residencies during the late 1960s alone included The Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Jethro Tull and The Jimi Hendrix Experience! Now Ginglik hope to make the venue steeped in comedy royalty too!

Described as ‘London’s Best New Comedy Night’ by The Times, Ginglik’s Laugh Comedy Night ran at their Shepherd’s Bush venue for over 10 years before transferring to Kensington venue The Roof Gardens (named as one of ‘London’s best comedy clubs’ by the Evening Standard, January 2017) and now to 100 Wardour St. Previous Ginglik alumni have included Robin Williams, Michael McIntyre, Jimmy Carr, Al Murray, Lee Mack, Russell Howard, Micky Flanagan, Sean Lock, Chris Addison, Miranda Hart, Milton Jones, Stewart Lee, Adam Hills, John Richardson, Shappi Khorsandi, Greg Davies, Rob Newman, Mark Thomas, Mackenzie Crook, Frank Skinner and many, many more!

The inaugural night at 100 sees the talented Tony Law, Andrew Ryan, Kelly Convey and Darren Harriott appearing.

Tony Law
‘Takes post-modern stand-up to a dangerously funny new level’ The Guardian
‘Chaos has rarely been so finely constructed and this much fun’ The Times
Tony Law is a three-time Chortle Award winner, Amused Moose Best Show winner and Fosters Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee. He is known for his highly surreal material and delivery, and eclectic historical style of dress, favouring boots with turned-up jeans and a Viking/explorer style of hair. His extensive TV and radio credits include: Have I Got News For You (BBC One), The Alternative Comedy Experience (Comedy Central), 8 Out Of 10 Cats (Channel 4),  Celebrity Mastermind (BBC One), Celebrity Squares (ITV) Never Mind The Buzzcocks (BBC Two). This year, Tony will be recording his BBC Radio 4 show, Tony Law: 21st Century Adventurer!

Andrew Ryan
‘An hour of hilarious comedy’  EdFestMag
‘Hard not to enjoy’ The Daily Record
Andrew Ryan is now one of the most sought after comics to emerge in recent years, in demand as a headliner and an MC at the biggest comedy clubs and festivals across Ireland and the UK.  His quintessentially Irish storytelling abilities and cheeky, friendly demeanour makes him a natural observational stand up.  Andrew has performed stand-up on BBC3’s Russell Howard’s Good News, Best of the Edinburgh Festival Live on BBC3,  Live at The Comedy Store for Comedy Central, and Live for MIND on Comedy Central.

Kelly Convey
‘1 of 9 Hilarious Women to Look Out For in 2017’ Metro
‘Kelly is a bright and filthy new star.’ Funny Women
Kelly Convey is an ‘in-your-face and reassuringly confident’ (Marissa Burgess – Chortle) comedian who is not one to mince her words when giving audiences an insight into what modern women really think. While her outspoken and forward-thinking musings may go against the grain, ‘there’s a winning authenticity to her material’ (Steve Bennett – Chortle) that is refreshing and relatable. This authenticity has led to a whole host of accolades and acknowledgments in her whirlwind rise through the comedy scene. Voted by The Metro as ‘1 of 9 Hilarious Women to Look Out for in 2017, Kelly is, no doubt, one to watch.

Darren Harriott (MC)
‘Passionate, articulate, witty and bursting with streetwise confidence.’  Evening Standard
‘he’s properly funny… a man who wouldn’t dream of touching on a topic unless he had a crisp line on it.’  The Times
Darren Harriott is one of the most exciting up-and-coming comedians on the circuit. Over the last year, he has appeared on Russell Howard’s Stand Up Central, and supported Jimmy Carr on tour. He also provided tour support for Funmbi Omotayo. Darren then headed to the Edinburgh Festival 2016, as part of the prestigious Pleasance Reserve, where he featured on the comedy show, BBC Radio 4 Extra Stands Up. His debut Edinburgh Fringe hour this year, Defiant, received numerous rave reviews, including from The Times and the Evening Standard.

AVANTgarden: Be You, Be Proud

SEEN is intrigued to hear about AVANTgarden from FKA Twigs, a new digizine dedicated to self-care, beauty and the art of braids within the black community. Certainly on my voyaging around London, I’m struck, as an observer, by the beauty and complexity of the braids I see.

Ladies of the Press at Sluice Biennial

SEEN headed up to Hackney recently, there to peruse this year’s Sluice Biennial. A large and airy building at Morning Lane housed fascinating creative projects by artists and creators who have come together under the Sluice banner. What SEEN particularly liked was the variety of work on display and the informal atmosphere in which it …

The Castle at the Space: SEEN Reviews

SEEN was not that familiar with the work of Howard Barker prior to seeing ‘The Castle’ but feels she must rectify that situation. A powerful piece on the nature of masculinity, war, gender roles and the essential unreliability of religious faith, ‘The Castle’ benefits from a powerhouse cast and a stripped-back set, making the most of the Space’s environment.
