The Elephant’s in the Room: John Lewis’ Roof Garden

Never mind if the sun’s shining or not, just get yourselves up onto the roofs of the city and experience that get-away-from-it-all feeling. John Lewis has outdone itself this year in SEEN’s opinion, hosting a variety of eclectic residencies. The latest is The Elephant, a Michelin-starred restaurant from Torquay. There’s a relaxed yet buzzy vibe up there amid the flowers and summer house.

From now until the end of September, The Elephant’s residency offers casual fine dining and the exquisite flavours of the English coast. Chef Proprietor of The Elephant, Simon Hulstone’s menu changes daily, dependent on seasonal availability. Dishes include:

Chicken Crackling – Mayfield farmhouse chicken crackling, sour cream and chicken salt
Crab – Paignton crab with bantam egg, spelt toast, salsa verde and Tellicherry black pepper
Cured Trout – Kikkoman soy and ginger cured Fjord trout, cucumber, natural yoghurt and Cornish dulse powder
Today’s Catch – sustainably sourced fish, Cornish seaweed butter, samphire and pickled onions

The Elephant was the first restaurant in the town of Torquay to be awarded a Michelin star in 2005, and has proudly maintained it ever since. Having cooked professionally since his schooldays, Simon Hulstone is one of the UK’s most accomplished chefs with a number of awards and accolades to his name.
