Kali Uchis: The Sound of the Summer

The sound of the summer has arrived. Combining the very best aspects of R’n’B, Soul and Hip Hop, breakout star Kali Uchis is bringing her irresistible blend of sass and swagger into the spotlight, just in time for the sun to come out. SEEN has heard a sneak preview of “Tyrant” and is pleased to tell you that like all good songs, there’s a powerful story at the heart of it.

A multi-talented vocalist, producer and songwriter in her own right, the fabulous LA-via-Colombia Uchis has had a busy few years. Her debut EP “Por Vida”, released in 2015, nabbed universal acclaim from the likes of the New York Times, Pitchfork and the Guardian, and subsequently has seen her collaborating with the stellar likes of Diplo, Tyler the Creator, KAYTRANADA and, of course Gorillaz – she appears on two tracks from their new album “Humanz”.

Now, with a hotly anticipated debut LP hurtling towards release, Uchis unleashes a scintillating teaser, in the welcome form of the tough yet slinky, Latin-flavoured anthem, “Tyrant”. Deceptively infectious, it is an iron fist balled up in a mink fur glove, with Uchis’ airy, fluttering vocals belying the sharp sting in the story’s tail – and that’s before emergent British singer and Drake protégée Jorja Smith enters the fray. In Uchis’ own words: “Tyrant is a post-apocalyptic love song. Wanting to stay in the haze of puppy love forever & never face the power struggles, because that’s your only real escape from the cold realities of life.”

It is just another potent example of what exactly sets Kali Uchis apart, and why, come this summer, she will be taking her rightful place in the musical firmament. The live dates have sold like hot cakes, so another has been added at the fashionable Oslo.

June 10th – Demon Dayz Festival, Margate – SOLD OUT
June 11th – Oslo, London – ON SALE FRIDAY
June 12th – Jazz Café, London  – SOLD OUT

My Furry Lady: the Art of Marion Peck at Dorothy Circus Gallery

SEEN can safely say that there is nowhere quite like Dorothy Circus Gallery in Notting Hill. It is the very antithesis of the white, clinical art gallery that abounds in the capital. From the beautiful yet disquieting pop surrealist art that is the passion of gallery director Alexandra Mazzanti, to the welcoming gallery itself complete …
