Primavera Sound Barcelona Announce Stellar Lineup for 2017

SEEN is positively giddy with excitement over the lineup for this year’s Primavera Sound, taking place from 31st May to the 4th June. A plethora of acts over five days sees everybody’s tastes catered for with headliners Arcade Fire, Bon Iver, Frank Ocean, The XX, Aphex Twin, SEEN favourite Grace Jones, Solange and the great Van Morrisson to name a few. The roster of acts consolidates Primavera Sound’s position as an increasingly important cultural reference point for contemporary music.

The Parc del Fòrum is the place to go for the majority of shows and the Raval neighbourhood will be HQ for the ever-popular free programme right in the centre of Barcelona. From the soul punk of The Make-Up to pop slacker Mac De Marco to the electronic delights of British duo Bicep, all genres of music have a home at Primavera.

Guitar fans will not be disappointed: King Gizzard and the Wizard Lizard, The Black Angels, Gojira and Converge will be turning it up to eleven, aided and abetted by veteran punk rockers The Damned. The great thing about Primavera Sound is their bold approach to the unusual and avant-garde. Eliza Soares, the first lady of Brazilian music will be there, as will sixties cult band The Zombies, King Sunny Adé and Junun, looking at traditional North Indian music.

It’s also a great place to hear emerging artists: Sampha, Glass Animals, Alexandra Savoir, the dark and twisted world of King Krule and country pop diva Nikki Lane will doubtless acquire new fans. Native Spanish talent is well represented by Agorazein from Madrid, post punksters Belako, the Basque Berri Txarrak, and flamenca Rosalia with Raül Refree amongst many other home-grown acts. Some artists are still to be announced so expect surprises on the day from The Hidden Stage.

SEEN is intrigued to hear about AVANTgarden from FKA Twigs, a new digizine dedicated to self-care, beauty and the art of braids within the black community. Certainly on my voyaging around London, I’m struck, as an observer, by the beauty and complexity of the braids I see.

Ladies of the Press at Sluice Biennial

SEEN headed up to Hackney recently, there to peruse this year’s Sluice Biennial. What SEEN particularly liked was the variety of work on display and the informal atmosphere in which it …

The Castle at the Space: SEEN Reviews

SEEN was not that familiar with the work of Howard Barker prior to seeing ‘The Castle’ but feels she must rectify that situation. A powerful piece on the nature of masculinity, war, gender roles and the essential unreliability of religious faith, ‘The Castle’ benefits from a powerhouse cast and a stripped-back set, making the most of the Space’s environment.
