Burberry: the British Luxury Brand

Burberry is a brand synonymous with Britain. Under the leadership of its Chief Creative Officer and Chief Executive Officer, Yorkshire-born Christopher Bailey, the label has gone from strength to strength. Bailey started out as Design Director in 2001 with a startlingly clear personal vision of how the brand would evolve. Encapsulating the collections, brand imagery, architecture, consumer technology, product design and consumer-facing activities, Bailey set the brand on course.

Collaboration with former Executive Officers Rose Marie Bravo and Angela Ahrendts saw the global dominance of the Burberry brand over the following 13 years. Creation of the Burberry Foundation which helps young people realise their potential through developing their creativity and represents Burberry’s commitment to being a part of their local communities.

The AW17 Burberry collection saw a restrained palette of blues, blacks and greys, asymmetric tailoring and stripes coupled with cool white cotton, demonstrating yet again how far ahead of the fashion pack Burberry is. SEEN loved the asymmetric black jacket that wrapped around the model’s body over a crisp white shirt: tailoring with a twist.

As you would expect, Bailey is a supporter and mentor of emerging British creative talent from institutions around the UK, including the Royal College of Art, the Chelsea College of Art, the University of Huddersfield, Sheffield Hallam University, the Batley School of Art and the University of Westminster. In 2012, Christopher Bailey was named Chair of Fashion Fringe, one of the leading platforms supporting emerging fashion talent in the UK; an exciting combination of roles as Bailey determines the shape of things to come for Burberry.
