60th Anniversary of the Iconic Lounge Chair by Charles and Ray Eames

In 1956, the Lounge Chair and the accompanying Ottoman were created by Charles and Ray Eames, for the Herman Miller Company. These pieces are important classic examples of design, still on display at MOMA, New York. 60 years later, Vitra has introduced a limited edition of these pieces, which will be available from 1st November 2016, to 31st January 2017, proving the Lounge chair an icon of modern design.

When the designers created the Lounge chair, they not only wanted to make a traditional British chair, but also to build the most comfortable chair ever. They added more adjectives to the piece: soft, elegant, smart and fashionable. Furthermore, all options are made with high quality materials by a skilled labour force. The design style focuses on the aluminium body and how it joins the backrest to the headrest, creating an integrated chair. The Ottoman, though a separate piece, complements the chair perfectly.

Charles Eames was an American architect and designer (1907-1978) who was married to Ray. Together they started to design furniture. Both were pioneers in the use of new materials like resin and fibreglass to make their chairs.

Sculpture in the City, Art for Everyone

SEEN thoroughly enjoyed a preview of the 18 new artworks around the financial district’s square mile. Set up by The City of London in 2010, this excellent initiative expands its footprint every year, improving the area and proving that when people are happy, they work better.

Alex Evans at the Foundry Gallery, Chelsea Quarter: LDF17

The astute reader will have noticed that SEEN loves art about London. There are many artists in this city who draw (pun intended) their inspiration from it, none more so than Alex Evans whose fractal renderings hint at the entropic nature of urban life and perhaps also our anxieties and isolation in the 21st century. His latest exhibition ‘Invisible Systems’ can be seen at the Foundry Gallery, tucked away off the King’s Road until 26th October.
