Designer Jaime Hayon at BD Barcelona: LDF 2016

The first thing that strikes you about Jaime Hayon – the man and his work – is how much fun they both are. Hayon’s work is currently gracing the BD Barcelona showroom in Berry Street, Clerkenwell, bringing the warmth of Spain into an autumnal London.

Cheeky grey and red monkeys made from architectonic concrete and resin hold aloft trays of bananas or delicious Häagen-Dazs cakes. His playful Showtime ceramic vases with their quirky glazes and shapes straddle the line between art and design. A sideboard has different shaped feet, inspired by current designs contributed by family and friends, but when put together on the same piece of furniture create something eclectic and modular.

For Hayon, it all starts with an idea or theme, then he sketches. Sometimes he puts opposite images together, ‘Tropical Scandinavia’ for example. SEEN can’t be the only ones dying to see the fruit of that idea. Sometimes travel inspires his design process. A recent journey through Africa gave birth to the Monkey Side-tables. Rattan versions still linger in Africa, a hangover from Colonial days. Only Hayon’s monkeys look like they might whip your cake away or push it in your face.

The colours are warm and sunny; custard-yellow, greens, sculpted smooth grey, reds, gold glazes… No time for neutrals here. The accent is on FUN. For as Jaime Hayon said yesterday, we’ll all be dead soon enough. The pieces attract a lot of attention from the street, a tribute to their inherent humour, and an uplifting part of the Clerkenwell Design district.

Ladies of the Press at Sluice Biennial

SEEN headed up to Hackney recently, there to peruse this year’s Sluice Biennial. A large and airy building at Morning Lane housed fascinating creative projects by artists and creators who have come together under the Sluice banner. What SEEN particularly liked was the variety of work on display and the informal atmosphere in which it …

The Castle at the Space: SEEN Reviews

SEEN was not that familiar with the work of Howard Barker prior to seeing ‘The Castle’ but feels she must rectify that situation. A powerful piece on the nature of masculinity, war, gender roles and the essential unreliability of religious faith, ‘The Castle’ benefits from a powerhouse cast and a stripped-back set, making the most of the Space’s environment.
