The New Way to Shop: MADE.COM

If, like SEEN, you don’t want the faff of visiting innumerable furniture shops looking for that one perfect piece, then have a look at MADE.COM, for bespoke or designer furniture from the manufacturers either through their website or at their flagship retail space at 100 Charing Cross Road, a short walk from the heart of the capital's furniture district on and around Tottenham Court Road.

The Soho Showroom is an interactive space which replicates the website, whilst bringing a sense of theatre for customers. Full scale ‘virtual’ products are projected amongst a number of room set-ups, so that visitors can browse the full online selection whilst actually in the store.

Having selected your piece, access the multiple iMac stations to place your order or use handheld NFC (Near Field Communication) tablets to view product information whilst browsing. Fabric samples and product postcards are also available.

According to Ning Li, Co-Founder and CEO, MADE.COM: “Everyone is trying to find a way to link both online and physical worlds. Online, there are no square footage constraints – space is endless – so coming up with ways to showcase our full catalogue here was a challenge. We’ve achieved this by incorporating digital elements, but only in ways we feel add value and are not in any way gimmicky.”
The key to their great prices is that MADE.COM cut out the middleman, allowing users to buy furniture directly from the manufacturers. It also invites users to vote on designs, thereby giving the consumer direct influence over future trends. SEEN has a feeling that MADE.COM will soon be a market leader in this style of retailing.

Sculpture in the City, Art for Everyone

SEEN thoroughly enjoyed a preview of the 18 new artworks around the financial district’s square mile. Set up by The City of London in 2010, this excellent initiative expands its footprint every year, improving the area and proving that when people are happy, they work better.

Alex Evans at the Foundry Gallery, Chelsea Quarter: LDF17

The astute reader will have noticed that SEEN loves art about London. There are many artists in this city who draw (pun intended) their inspiration from it, none more so than Alex Evans whose fractal renderings hint at the entropic nature of urban life and perhaps also our anxieties and isolation in the 21st century. His latest exhibition ‘Invisible Systems’ can be seen at the Foundry Gallery, tucked away off the King’s Road until 26th October.
