Hawksmoor Bar Celebrates its 10th Anniversary in Spitalfields

SEEN does love the summer months in London. A new season means new cocktails, and what better way to celebrate the longer evenings and warmer months than by joining in with Hawksmoor’s celebrations of their tenth anniversary in historic Spitalfields?

The award-winning Hawksmoor has transcended its beginnings over an illegal strip club, gradually accruing a reputation as a dining and drinking centre of excellence, drawing many bartenders keen to raise their game in its world-famous bar.

Their classic drinks Shaky Pete’s Ginger Brew and Marmalade Cocktail are still to be found on the Gin Years list, but that hasn’t stopped brothers Ali and Josh Reynolds (plus the rest of the Spitalfields team) from reinventing the British national tipple for a new menu of ‘next generation’ drinks.

Lovers of the unusual will find much to delight them here; homemade bitters, shrubs and syrups abound in the new mouth-watering menu…

Sunset Sazerac: a summery blend of Strawberry Cognac, Coconut Bourbon, Pineapple Bitters and Absinthe.

Shadow Boxer: a heady mix of Chivas Regal, Blackberry and Maple syrup, PX and Fernet Branca.

Devil’s Heart: darkly delicious Mezcal, Pomegranate Shrub, Jameson Sloe Berry bitters, Sherry, Citrus and Merchant Heart Ginger Ale.

Personally, I may go for the extraordinary-sounding Old-Fashioned Date Night, a drink composed of Popcorn-washed Ron Zacapa, Coke and Date Reduction, Chocolate and Tickets! Fans of the exotic will prefer the Good Tiki Drink made with Rum, Smoked Passionfruit, Toasted Coconut, Citrus, Spices, Branca Menta and Lillet Rouge. Cocktails for all tastes and persuasions, from the classic to the adventurous!

As ever, the food menu is hearty and fresh to complement the cocktail flavours: Classic sandwiches and bar snacks such as Short rib nuggets and French Ribs, Chicken Poutine, Lobster Roll, and Aloo Kana Chana Burger promise an evening of unforgettable taste combinations.

Sculpture in the City, Art for Everyone

SEEN thoroughly enjoyed a preview of the 18 new artworks around the financial district’s square mile. Set up by The City of London in 2010, this excellent initiative expands its footprint every year, improving the area and proving that when people are happy, they work better.

Alex Evans at the Foundry Gallery, Chelsea Quarter: LDF17

The astute reader will have noticed that SEEN loves art about London. There are many artists in this city who draw (pun intended) their inspiration from it, none more so than Alex Evans whose fractal renderings hint at the entropic nature of urban life and perhaps also our anxieties and isolation in the 21st century. His latest exhibition ‘Invisible Systems’ can be seen at the Foundry Gallery, tucked away off the King’s Road until 26th October.
