Lovers of this most traditional of British dishes will soon be able to enjoy fish and chips at a new branch of Poppie’s, opening soon in Old Compton Street in trendy Soho. With fresh fish from Billingsgate Market and delicious hand-cooked Maris Piper chips, plus fishcakes, saveloys, jellied eels, beer, and wine all served with Poppie’s inimitable style, this café will be the last word in comfort food. Poppie’s promises excellent food and drink served by warm, friendly staff in a retro style café harking back to the 1970s. And that’s not all… As owner, and purveyor of fish and chips for sixty years ‘Pop’ Newland says: “Although I’m an East End lad, Soho has always been an interesting and iconic part of London. I had a jellied eel stall on Rupert Street outside what was then the Rehearsal Rooms for a year in the 60s, so spent time in the area, but it’s changed a lot since my day, I hope Poppie’s can bring a dash of East End charm and a bit of 70s Soho to Old Compton Street. I love live music and I’m really excited we’ll have a stage in the Soho shop, like we do in Camden, with music and dancing. I am equally chuffed the shop will be on the site of the old 2i’s Coffee Bar, the birthplace of Rock ‘n’ Roll.”
